Surgical Division

The Surgery Department consists of the following units: general surgery, obesity surgery, trauma unit and a transplant unit. The outpatient department is also unified. Among the most prominent surgeries are the removal of tumors (such as breast, neck, thyroid, esophagus, stomach, large intestines, thin, liver, bile duct, malignant skin cancer).  The department also handles laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, hernia and colon injury, complex liver surgery to remove tumors of the liver, surgery to correct abdominal rupture and emergency surgery across the emergency room. Kidney transplants and pancreas and liver surgeries are also prominent. The Department of Surgery uses the latest innovative therapeutic methods and has independent and active surgery departments in the following areas:

Surgery for Obesity: In the Department of Surgery we perform four types of surgical procedures for the elimination of obesity: Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, Laparoscopic Roux-enY Gastric Bypass, Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy and Duodenal Switch. Tests are performed in advance to determine which type is best for patients

Heart and Coronary Artery Surgery: Coronary artery surgery, heart valve repair with echocardiography during operation, replacement of severely deformed valves, Cryo-MAZ (to correct heart arrhythmia) and surgical treatment of all types of congenital heart defects. Thoracic tumors and a wide range of chest diseases are treated by a multidisciplinary team to carry out extensive and complex operations, such as replacing damaged parts of the aorta.

Colorectal surgery: Various surgeries are performed, including complex procedures to reconstruct the anal sphincter, pelvic floor, rectal and vaginal fistula.  Procedures for the removal of malignant tumors in the colon and rectum also occur, as well as  complex procedures for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Removal of hemorrhoids, cracks and intestinal obstruction is common, too.

Laparoscopic surgery: Laparoscopic surgery is performed through tiny incisions in the abdomen – this innovative technique is the first of its kind in the country and one of the leading routes in the world. An innovative surgical method called NOTES – Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery – is performed without creating a single incision in the patient, instead using the patient’s natural nozzles. It is used only in a few medical centers in the United States. Robot-Assisted Surgery – This technology has been developed by NASA and helps the surgeon achieve the best results.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery:  The department handles skeletal and facial surgery due to trauma, surgery of benign and malignant tumors in the oral cavity and jaw, reconstruction of the jaw after surgery of tumors or trauma and the correction of jaw defects.  It also conducts orthodontic surgery, correction of jaw abnormalities by bone elongation and TMJ (Salivary gland surgery to control severe facial infections).

Oncology Surgery: Removal of malignancies in the colon, breast, esophagus, abdomen, and other areas.

Orthopedics: general orthopedics, joint arthroscopy, skeletal growth, upper limbs, structural shock complications, shoulders, diseases related to osteoarthritis, spine diseases, ankles, amputation, knee surgery, sports medicine. Orthopedics for children can also include congenital structural diseases.

Nose, Ear and Throat surgery/head and neck surgery: Nose, Ear and Throat surgery can consist of facial nerve paralysis, tumor removal, skull base surgery, treatment and surgery of head and neck tumors.  We also treat thyroid disease, thyroid gland, salivary gland, larynx and pharynx issues. All types of eardrum problems are explored including laser bone marrow, internal ear diseases (hearing loss and dizziness), reconstruction of the eardrum, ear stiffness surgery, and cochlea implants for children and adults. Nose surgery (cosmetic surgery), laparoscopic surgery for the sinus and skull base, cessation of obstructive sleep apnea, and functional nose surgery are also conducted. Throat and voice disorders such as laryngoscopy and pharyngology are treated, as well as surgery using gastrointestinal endoscopy, including diagnostic procedures and extraction of foreign objects, laser surgery of the upper airway (including treatment of inflated glomerular, sub-zebra and trachea obstruction), and swallowing problems are all explored.

Plastic Surgery: The Department of Plastic Surgery at the Hadassah Medical Center specializes in the reconstruction of congenital malformations (e.g. cleft palate or ear abnormalities), excision and skin reconstruction due to basal cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma, breast reconstruction after mastectomy, burns, skin grafts, and repair of Hypertrophic bone and scars. Nasal surgery, reshaping of the tissues around the eye, enlargement and reduction of the breast and extra abdominal skin surgery aree also explored.

Trauma and Emergency Medicine Unit: Treatment of victims of car accidents, attacks and other serious incidents. The unit operates on the basis of guidelines developed by the American College of Surgeons and is a model for other hospitals in Jerusalem and the country

Urology: Reproductive diseases, urinary and urinary tract disorders, urinary incontinence, urinary tract infections, kidney stones and urinary tract, benign and malignant tumors of the kidneys, bladder, prostate and testes, as well as erectile dysfunction, impotence and male fertility. The department performs laparoscopic and prostate cancer surgery using the Da Vinci Surgical System.
